Are You Tired Of Headaches?

Are you tired of headaches holding you back? You’re not alone. More than 11.9 million Australians suffer from headaches and migraines, with 4.9 million struggling with chronic migraine (which is more than 15 migraines per month)*. Headaches and migraines do not discriminate and can impact people of all ages. The type of headache and/or migraine and its affiliated presenting pain, can range from mild discomfort, to debilitating, throbbing and pulsating pain, accompanied with nausea, vomiting and a sensitivity to light.

We recognise the impact headaches and migraines can have on individuals and we treat people suffering from these, every day. While the triggers vary from patient to patient, research has shown that manual therapy and chiropractic care is effective in reducing frequency and intensity of these events.

Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) Spinal Health Week, 22-28 May 2023

Spinal Health Week is an annual ACA campaign dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of improving the spinal health of people of all ages. This year, the theme is ‘Tired of Headaches Holding You Back’ and it provides a timely opportunity to look at the different types of headaches and migraine, and the way chiropractic care can support you with these.

Chiropractic care can provide effective, drug-free pain relief to headache and migraine sufferers, using a range of specialised, non-surgical techniques, and manual manipulations. We refer to it as a ‘healing hands’ approach to spinal healthcare and you can read more on our headache treatments here. Scroll down for more information on the different types of headaches and causes, and also to find out about a few of the ACA Spinal Health Week competitions, where adults have the chance to win an Apple iPad 256GB Wi-Fi (Space Grey) 9th Gen worth $799 and kids can win a RukusFx Motion Controlled Music Mixer (for ages 7-12) or a Chalkios Mega Sidewalk Chalk Set (for ages 6 and under).

Let’s Look Closer At The Types Of Headaches and Migraines

There are three main types of headaches – tension, cervicogenic (neck related) and migraines. Tension headaches are the most common and it’s estimated that up to 7 million Australians* suffer from these. Help is at hand (literally) – research showing* that chiropractic care has been effective at reducing the frequency and intensity of these. Cervicogenic (neck related) headaches often start as pain in the neck, before spreading to your eyes, forehead and temples*, and are 2-3 times more prevalent in females aged between 30-44 years of age. Again chiropractic care can help, focussing on the cause and optimising your spinal (and neck) health, see our headache treatment page and neck pain treatment for more information.

Migraine is definitely the most debilitating of them all! We know and we understand. Migraine sufferers experience intense throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. In most cases and left untreated, a migraine will leave a person unable to attend work for a day or more. Migraine can impact your professional and personal life – studies show that 71% of migraine sufferers are women* and 7.6% have chronic migraine. Chiropractors can help, with drug free care that’s been shown to reduce migraine duration and severity.
